Katie and Cory’s wedding at St. Luke’s Episcopal in Anchorage
Katie and Cory provided such a wonderful beginning to my wedding season-at St. Luke's Episcopal in Anchorage on the outskirts of Louisville. What an overall lovely day! I have already written quite a bit about their wedding in my previous entry, but there are a few more details I can share.
First and foremost, what a close and loving family and group of close friends--above and beyond many others I have experienced. As I am so privileged to share one of the most important and significant events in the lives of not only the bride and groom, but also their larger families, I have become a very interested observer in family dynamics and human relationships in general. Weddings (and pretty much any large family event) can easily bring out both the best and worst in people, and on a day so wrapped up in emotion as it is anyway, it doesn't take much intuition to tune in on wavelengths among different family members, and the general way a particular family relates to one another overall. It is a fascinating study and mental exercise that has developed naturally as part of my job, and I'm so grateful for it, as I believe it helps me to have a deeper understanding, compassion, empathy, joy, and shared experience with our greater "human family" in general, as cheesy and cliched as all that might sound.
Well, that was a long-winded and likely too verbose way of saying that there was nothing but overwhelming love and support among all of Katie and Cory's families, both separately and combined, and also including the large circle of friends that were just as much family to them as well. One of the most poignant moments of the whole day occurred after the traditional toasts to the bride and groom. After Katie's dad gave his toast and shared his gratitude with the wedding guests, followed by the best man and maid of honor, a really amazing thing happened. I didn't count how many, exactly, but person after person after person stood on their own and gave beautiful testimony to how much Katie and/or Cory have been such a blessing in their lives. What an amazing outpouring of love! And how blessed and fortunate that the newlyweds have such a large group of people to count on for love and support in their new lives together. I have been taking photographs at weddings for many, many years, and I have never seen anything quite like this. People all over the large room stood, one after another, and shared both memories and funny stories, but so much more--touching testimony to what very special people Katie and Cory both are. Apparently they have done much to bless the lives of those around them, and how wonderful that so many felt compelled to share their love.
And another way this was manifested--Katie, her mom Julia, and others I'm sure but can't name, went to so much effort to put so many special little touches to the day. It was so evident how much thought and preparation went into planning the event, and I don't mean having ideas and then delegating them out to vendors--there were so many things that were handmade by the bride and her family themselves. So many details that I could write paragraphs describing them, but I think the best way would be to add a part 3 on my blog to the coverage of their day, just dedicated to details. The photos I chose from to make this blog entry were meant to give Katie's out of town family an early preview of the wedding, so I included mostly narrative and family photos. The larger group of their proofs is almost ready to post to my gallery now, so I will pull a few detail shots to share, along with the story and idea behind each one. Hopefully this may also help any other brides out there looking to add special touches to their upcoming wedding!
And lastly--just a quick note about the weather. Looking back now, after at least 3 solid weekends of ever-increasing heat and humidity levels in Louisville in the infamous Ohio Valley, I am very wistful about the temperature and humidity levels that day! My goodness--these last 3 weeks have had such lovely and fun weddings that I can't wait to share, but holy cow--the heat, the heat! We used to say here in Louisville that if you don't like the weather, just wait an hour and it will be different. I can't say that has been the case for the month of June, so far at least!

Stunning as always, Kathy. I’ve always admired your work and you certainly didn’t disappoint this time for sure! Your bride was a doll too.
Such sweet thoughts!
Thanks for capturing our wonderful day. I mean, I know we hired you and all, but it felt way more relaxed and fun, like you’re a long term friend. I can’t wait to see detail shots. I had SO much fun making everything.
