Louisville Science Center’s Thunderblast party | Thunder Over Louisville
I mentioned in my last entry that I would be shooting Thunder Over Louisville for the Louisville Science Center. This is the city of Louisville's premier event each year, kicking off the very popular Kentucky Derby Festival. Each year, 700,000 plus people converge on Louisville's waterfront for the day-long spectacle, which includes and airshow all afternoon, and then the world's largest annual fireworks display presented by the Zambelli Family. Also included are throngs of people in various states of intoxication, yucky port-a-pots, expensive vendors of food, drink, and souvenirs, and massive traffic jams after the last shell of the grand finale has exploded.
The Louisville Science Center's Thunderblast party is a fantastic way to be able to enjoy all the great features of the day, while at the same time avoiding all the rest of the unpleasantries. The viewing location is excellent, right on the river and underneath the interstate overpasses, which provide shade from the hot sun and shelter in case the day happens to bring rain. They also go all out to provide a variety of activities for both the young and old, so there is never a bored moment whether you are 3 years old or 80. This year's activities included a hands-on science activities area near the meal tent outdoors, a visit from the Baby T-Rex from the upcoming "Walking With Dinosaurs" spectacular that is visiting Louisville next month, a visit from Rodney the Robot, who led a dance party, and a wonderful picnic style meal provided by Masterson's Catering (who also has catered many of the weddings I've worked both at the Science Center and others; their food is always great). The museum was also open all day, with both the regular exhibits and special activities scheduled all day for extra entertainment and distraction. Since it was really quite chilly this year, the museum also provided a place to go warm up throughout the day. And last but certainly not least, clean, indoor restrooms were available inside the museum, so no disgusting port-a-pot use was necessary :)
Here are a few fun photographs from the day. As I've said many times, I love the Louisville Science Center and am always thrilled to work with them!
