My iPhone and I

I resisted getting an iPhone for a long time (too long, actually), and then when I finally decided that I really needed one, I had several months left on a contract to wait on anyway. By the time I was able to finally get it (last September), I was more than ready and so excited. It really has proven to be an invaluable business tool, just as I expected--in fact, I'm not sure now how I ever lived without it. One thing that I didn't give much consideration to, however, was the phone's little camera. I was so used to hauling my big professional camera everywhere anyway, and I couldn't imagine why I would want to use a dumb little phone camera with all my nice equipment. Well, it is an understatement to say boy, was I ever wrong. I am absolutely, completely in love with my iPhone camera.

Not to mention all the great apps you can get, so I even get the fun of editing my iPhone pictures to make them much nicer and perhaps even a bit "artsy". In fact, it is so easy and fun to use, and I'm so pleased with the results, that I have really started to neglect taking photos of my kids with my real camera as much.

I think I first fell in love with it on my trip to New Orleans last fall. As anyone who has been there knows, there is a lot of walking involved, and I didn't want to lug my camera bag all over the place, especially since I've done many photos of New Orleans with a big nice camera on previous trips. Also, since several late nights were involved, I felt much safer exploring around the Quarter at all hours without thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment strapped to me.

So, I started playing around with my iPhone camera and different processing and apps. It was like an epiphany! First, as I've said, I've already photographed the heck out of New Orleans, so I was actually a little stuck on how to do something different this trip. The phone solved that problem immediately. It completely reminded me of how much fun I used to have playing around with toy cameras such as the Holga or Diana when I was in college. Sure, the results are a bit unpredictable and the quality isn't perfect, but really, that is part of the fun.

And I had a total blast photographing my beloved NOLA with my silly little phone camera, and have continued to have fun with various projects using it ever since. Many of the pictures I took with my iPhone I like even better than ones taken with my real camera. I will post a few here just for fun.

NOLA-Photos taken with my real camera are filed under NOLA 2009.
